Very weird, a rabbit riding a dog with a snail on its arm as if it was a hunting bird?
Are the rabbits symbolic? Representing lust or something? Otherwise all I can think is that the illustrators must have been on something pretty potent.

Medieval Marginalia: At It Like Rabbits...

Very interesting, thanks for the link.

Yeah, interesting article -- and vids on Japanese art. Thanks.

Here's some more discussion on Randall's snail article, with links to other animal pics:

The Kickstarter appears to have been successful, though the figs aren't out yet. So maybe we'll see some of those cats, and other "marginal" creatures.

Edit: Looking at the figures again started "The Hunter's Funeral Procession" from Maher's Symphony No. 1 playing in my head, for some reason.

Maybe the reason is the Moritz von Schwind work shown in the vid, which is cited as Mahler's inspiration. It was an illustration for "a German book of folktales"; Das Knaben Wunderhorn, maybe? That would make sense, as Mahler wrote a number of pieces based on that work, which was a favorite of his.

Von Schwind was part of the Romantic movement in 19th century Germany, and did a lot of paintings on Medieval subjects, which leads me to wonder if he studied those marginalia.

OTOH, there's a ballad (with many variants) from Slovenia on the same subject, which inspired folk artists. Tinypic seems to be asleep, so I can't post any right now, but there's an example here:

The ones I've seen are certainly reminiscent of the Medieval manuscripts.

My, this thread has sent me down some strange rabbit holes. :D

Fascinating stuff!
Anthropomorhphised animals are a fixture of western cultural representation (way before Disney made millions out of the idea).
Why certain animals are selected to represent particular human characteristics is a mystery to me.
Rabbits - innocence!?
Given what we know of rabbit sex life and cannabilistic tendencies that seems a tad weird to modern ears!
The full cultural back story to mediaeval drolleries is quite hard to fathom however, without immersion in all sorts of quite complex social norms.
Best perhaps to just lie back and enjoy the weirdness of mediaeval marginalia.

I suppose the most likely generic fantasy army for these guys, once you get past the wholesome Disney image of anthropomorphic animals, is in a chaos army, where rampant sex mania and cannibalism is a plus.
It would certainly be different.

You could try an email. For a subject like this,I wonder if a small "sample pack" of say, 5 or six foot figures, at smallish discount from normal pricing, might be a useful marketing ploy? It would allow the dubious to stick their toe in -- or, to put it another way, get hooked! Same for the skellies.
