It's not even that, although that's bad enough. It's not only those who can't now get in to the country, it's the clear message being sent to loads of Europeans already here, that they aren't welcomed here by the UK Government and the Home Office will not behave fairly to them. Then there's the additional whammy of uncertainty about access to EU programs and funding, or visas for colleagues. We already know academics are being refused visas, and travel outside the UK is going to get much harder for teaching assignments, research activities, conferences and so on.

We've lost a load of pharmaceutical specialists, medical researchers and tertiary lecturers and researchers, all sold up and moved to continental Europe. It's a massive loss in taxation, skills and business locally, and these aren't turnip pickers, we don't have a huge reserve pool of unemployed bio-mechanical specialists or virologists. What we do have are empty jobs that were supporting services, empty houses unsuitable for first home buyers and businesses desperate to fill skills gaps.

It's also about to get much worse, from conversations with colleagues, skilled Europeans on fixed term contracts are looking to take the next contract elsewhere outside the UK. So far with kids, homes etc, it's been hard to uproot all that, but over time, more and more will simply take the next gig in Bratislava or Bruges instead of Birmingham.

I think the UK government is taking lessons from Bill. Drive out all the undesirables, (like Brits and Lefties from TNP), and anyone daring to question the prevailing orthodoxy using opaque rules and capriciously applied decisions.
