it was because he had no desire to leave... the ship needed someone who with what is a essentially a sense of adventure...

Yep, corny, like the Professor in Victory of the Daleks focusing on the memories of the girl he loved to stop himself blowing up,

I think all of that is tied up with the Pandorica if you extend the Pandora's Box thing...

Yep, a vital component in the take off procedure was a telepathic link with someone who wanted to leave that little spot in space/time.
Almost as if the willpower of the pilot ignited the engines.

It's interesting to reflect that the 1983 academic study of the series Doctor Who - The Unfolding Text noted that the series placed a huge importance on individuality and will.
A case in point being Omega, a unfortunate gentleman who had become eroded by his exposure to anti-matter to the point that the only thing that still truly existed of him was his will.

The use of individuality and will to overcome evil menaces is the strongest and most used theme in the programme.
It's why the Doctor has all his eccentric traits and will never wear a uniform and his enemies are frequently faceless or subject to a hive mind mentality where they share all thoughts and motivations with each other with little or no room for the individual to emerge.
An important message, I feel.

not really... could all make sense... I've a thought that came to me last night... young Amy is in the box... all of Amy's save the day moments have been about hope and love and fluffy stuff against the evils of the universe...

Now I'm not being narky or anything here but I will truly, never, never, never, understand what other people like or hate in an episode, ever.
To be honest, I would have thought that someone (and I don't think I'm being inaccurate here) that hasn't really enjoyed any of the series so far, would have found so much to hate in that episode.
Oh well, It's always nice when people enjoy the same things as you do...

ah, well I'm one of those who people who tends not to "hate" a series, just individual episodes or parts of an episode...so i'm pretty much going on a case-by-case basis.

And i'm not being particularly, erm... cynical, no erm, damn, i've lot my worms.... aha! Critical! (thats the worm!)...
i'm watching it as light entretainment with an open mind.

I only get annoyed by bits that annoy me at the time, rather than going back over it and going "Oh yeah that was shit!".

So yeah, I enjoyed it. I could probalby find bits that were shit, or arse-backward plot.. but nothing bad struck me at the time.

it was fun, nicely acted, amde ssense, was ammusing and the kids and wife liked it.

Nice Job BBC.

..wont affect what i think of the next one though, if that makes sense?

I think I agree with Jeds outlook.

I really enjoyed the episode up to that ending. Sure individual will and all, but it looked a bit deux et machina to me.

Meh.. no point being a hater, when there is so much Im starting to enjoy about this series.
