42mm Samurai

Postby Evilcartoonist » Wed Jan 29, 2014 2:17 am

These have been posted elsewhere, but I figured they'd be a nice way to introduce my painting on Frothers. (That, and I just want to figure out how to post images here.) 42mm samurai by Steve Barber Models. Not everyone's (anyone's?) scale, but this is my favorite of all my collections. Many of these are heavily converted (all of them have weapons I hammered out of brass rod.)

Stunning paint, you've put bags of character into some iffy minis. 8)

Exceptional paint work. I'm not a big fan of any Steve Barber models in any scale, but you have done those proud.

I have never handled them personally so I have to ask. Whats wrong with the mini's themselves exactly.

Dags, what would you use/recommend instead of the static grass?
Or is it more a personal preference?
I like flock for my smaller-scale stuff, but it looks like astro-turf under the 42mm stuff.

Nowt wrong with static grass per se, just less of it - earth/gravel with patches of grass looks far better imo

f.ex...

I quite like that there is more grass than normal. I would work in some tufts too though as it adds some variety

Point well-taken, Dags. I would use the excuse that they are just fighting on a grassy plain, but really, I'm just lazy and want to get the little warriors finished :)

Some of my earlier samurai actually have some rocks, brush, flowers, long grass and tufts. I guess it's time for me to stop being lazy and take my time.

Edit: Here's one of the first samurai (peasant) I did a few years ago. A little more going on with this base:
