Pony Wars: Is B Troop Coming Back?

Postby Bronshtein » Fri Sep 25, 2020 4:00 pm

Pete Berry of Baccus is trying to attract 1500 subscribers (minimum) to get the late Ian Beck's Pony Wars back in print.

https://ponywars.uk/

£25 a pop plus £5.50 postage to UK, £10.50 US

It's a nice idea (apart from the now politically incorrect approach of the original - already one tiff about 'Redskins' on TWW)but it used a fucking shed load of figures and from memory seemed to require quite a lot of real estate for modern tastes.

I'm not surprised it's struggling around the 164 subscriber mark.

Nostalgia make me want this to succeed, I'm just not sure nostalgia is what it used to be.

Good luck Pete, but I suspect B Troop ain't coming back again.

I can't remember - never actually bought a copy  - friends had them.

I seem to remember nobody had any figures for it so we proxied with ACW Federals, and Mongols, I think, or possibly Huns, for the Native Americans/Indians/Indigenous People/Hostiles.
More the Wild East than the Wild West.

I suppose with inflation the price isn't too far off, but I wonder if modern sensitivities and the fact the ideas are no longer novel, make 1,500 backers too high a target?

Been going two weeks and only 166.

My tatty old copy has a price sticker of £1.95 inside the front cover. Thirty years of inflation would make that £8.42.

£1.95! and I never bought a copy - more of a cheapskate than I thought I was.

I think rules have their own inflation index though- full colour shiny printed bound books versus cyclostat and stapled have moved up market, in costs if nothing else.

True, but black & white stapled pages with line drawings plus insert sheets printed on yellow and pink card stock have a certain charm.

I think I have a copy somewhere, but didn't you need about 800 Indians?

Yep, hence my comment about 'shed loads of figures'.

I think an essentially light relief throw away game, which is what these were/are, is expected to run to about 30 figures a side max these days.

Times change.

Even in 6mm the numbers required are approaching a modest investment.

(Only another 1293 subscribers to go!)

I have the original, and it was 23 quid cheaper.I like the rules, suspect a modern version will filled with fluff images.
