Is there a reason / advantage to preserve the original film as opposed to digitizing it?

Again, remember - don't respond to the twat. Ignore him.
He'll come out with stuff purposefully to provoke you. Be strong and just ignore him.
That's the only way you'll get to him. He thrives on attention, so don't give him any. It winds him up something rotten.
No matter what he says (he's just doing it to make you say something), just ignore him.
It really aggravates him. He gets more desperate and starts getting abusive. You can tell it's working.
Ignore him.

1. Nobody knew they were worth preserving.
2. When did digitizing technology come in?
3. They take up a lot of space.

Older materials are difficult to preserve, even with modern technology and knowledge. Acetate film has to be stored in a cold environment. Nitrate film has to be stored in a freezer. Either way, they are going to break down sooner or later, and any usage will speed up that process. Sticking a roll of nitrate film into a projector creates a high risk of starting a fire, making the material practically useless. Digitization (or even copying to polyester film) will preserve the content, which is far more important than the medium. Digitization also creates a useable copy.
