I'm a bit surprised that our local theater is still playing it this year.

It's a tradition going back 35-40 years at the Paramount that the last film of the summer series is GWTW. It's a pretty fucked up story, though.

Taxi Driver and Titanic are fucked up stories, GwtW is trite, but shouldn't have been pulled, unless no one came to see it. All the movies in the Summer Classic Film Series could result in outrage, real or imagined, from one person or another over the slightest thing.

If you're *that* kind of person, I guess. Why do you have such a hardon for GWTW, anyway?

Hardon hardly...

If one could get past with difficulty Scarlett O'Hara and her selfish behavior in societal interactions, there's the realization that not everything is hunky dory in the depiction of antebellum and postbellum society, but most stick with the shallow depiction of an idealized world and the resulting outrage over it. I lie Citizen Kane BTW...

FTFU. Nothing in my posts even suggest that as my position.

I'll hold you to that, next time there's a police shooting.[/quote]

You can hold me to that when there is an unjustified shooting, against which I've posted like the guy in Chicago where the unarmed man wasn't even approaching the police and the officer drilled him with multiple rounds. Those criminals should suffer the full force of the law.http://www.cnn.com/videos/us/2015/11/25/laquan-mcdonald-chicago-shooting-dashcam-video-orig-mg.cnn

Michael "Hands Up Don't Shoot" Brown? Different story. Police reacting to an armed individual who will not comply with orders to drop the weapon or to freeze instead of closing the ground between them? Different story.

I expect police and law enforcement to enforce the law, protect and serve but they are bound by the same laws the rest of us are. There are times when they need to react in a split second and after the fact they may learn they didn't need to shoot. But based on the information at the time, it was fully justified. You might find this of interest http://www.cnn.com/videos/tv/2015/11/27/use-of-force-police-drill-pt-1-costello-dnt-newsroom.cnn/video/playlists/police-use-of-force/

That cop who killed the woman who had called the police and was talking to them through the driver's side window? He violated safety rules and police protocol by shooting her from the passenger seat through the police car, and based on what I have heard to date should be held criminally liable.

Your post implied that I'd support ANY police shooting ESPECIALLY if it was a minority victim. A history of my posts commenting on shootings paint an entirely different position, reflective of the post just completed. They include the video that Rahm Emmanuel sat on and refused to release to the public for a long time. Not that you or any other antagonistic Frother could be bothered to recall that or let the truth get in the way of your baseless snarky comments.

Will you quit using that line, you dumb fuck. No sane person has the time or the inclination to search your link-riddled posting history. It's full of shit, like yourself.

Mark my words, "they" will want to destroy all traces of it, root and branch!
Burn all film and tapes, wipe all electronic files, and take a razor blade to all books that mention the Oscars it won!
:D

A minor (very) recurring theme on TMP is Peter Jackson having "in development" a remake of the Dambusters. I never saw it, but apparently the hero has a big black dog he calls "the n-word". There are those who will refuse to watch the movie, if it's ever made, if it is not an exact remake, including the dog's name.
Not that they would ever PAY to see it, even if it met their exacting criteria. No. Wait for it free on demand.

One wouldn't have to go all that effort...

Stuff degrades over time, especially pre-digital film, just don't restore the parts deemed censorable:

The disappearance of ancient books

The Censored Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies Guide

That link about the disappearance of ancient texts was fascinating. I never even thought of that reason, even though Samwell Tarly's job at the Citadel certainly emphasized it. Even Sam rooting around in the library at Castle Black gave preservation a high priority.
Mice. Bookworms. Roaches. All have destroyed more books than fanatics.
I particularly like the observation that the bad books must have survived because they were quoted. Until the mice ate them.

Since we're talking about Oscar winning movies, I seem to recall reading that we only have clips of Wings, the first Oscar winner, because most cellulose film disintegrated.
Why is Film Preservation taken so seriously by film buffs? And that's just the last 100 years.

Thanks for that link.

Bill the Guest,

No I won't. Not as long as dumb fucks like yourself and the poster in question continue to make outrageous posts about my position on things that are not only not supported by what I've posted, what I've posted is 180 degrees different than their claim.

If you are going to do an attack post on someone's position, you ought to have a fucking clue about which you post. When you don't you can expect to be called on it.

Oh, and log in or go fuck yourself. Too embarrassed to let folks know who you are? Or too lazy/stupid to be able to log in?

Cellulose nitrate is incredibly flammable and unstable, so most early films simply burned because because their storage buildings were exposed to sunlight. Cellulose acetate breaks down and loses its plasticity over time; the off-gassing fumes damage nearby paper and films. Don't forget too that wood pulp paper can break down over time as well. Just ask anybody involved in the archives field.

Bill the Guest,

Nope. Not a better idea at all. I'm at least a member here. You are just another "Bill" who does not deserve any respect and whose opinions mean even less than my own. And THAT really takes some doing!

Fortunately most here have worked it out - don't respond to the twat. Ignore him.
But there are still one or two that get hooked and have to react to him.
He'll come out with stuff purposefully to provoke you. Be strong and just ignore him.
That's the only way you'll get to him. He thrives on attention, so don't give him any. It winds him up something rotten.
No matter what he says (he's just doing it to make you say something), just ignore him.
It really aggravates him. He gets more desperate and starts getting abusive. You can tell it's working.
Ignore him.
