A Memphis theater’s pulling of ‘Gone with the Wind’ viewed as ‘cultural cleansing’ by critics
A Memphis theater has ended its 34-year tradition of screening the 1939 Oscar-winning-film “Gone With the Wind” at least once a year. The Orpheum Theatre dropped the movie from its programming after several patrons complained about an Aug. 11 screening, saying the film was “racially insensitive,” USA Today reported.

Couldn't care less about a gold digging manipulative emotional terrorist, but claiming that you'd been planning on removing the movie every year, then doing it after an 08/11 complaint, it's just jumping on the bandwagon.

It's good that they finally did, though, whatever their motivation.

I'm a bit surprised that our local theater is still playing it this year.

It's a tradition going back 35-40 years at the Paramount that the last film of the summer series is GWTW. It's a pretty fucked up story, though.

'Antifa' violence in Berkeley spurs soul-searching within leftist activist community
Among those appalled by the increasingly militant force are radicals from the 1960s peace movement.

Political scientist Jo Freeman, part of the radical student movement that forced UC Berkeley to permit political speech five decades ago, said she was dismayed at the effort that went into silencing opposition. She drew similarities between those who threatened her and other freedom marchers in the South in the 1960s, and those who bully the far right now.

“It is not uncommon for societies to produce a hate squad,” Freeman said. “People who want to suppress the right to speak — they are everywhere.”

Kitty Stryker, a Berkeley activist affiliated with groups like Pastel Bloc and Struggalo Circus, which offer medical aid during protests, said she was heartbroken to see media coverage of Sunday’s demonstration focus on violence. She said she saw a Trump supporter pepper spray a black bloc member and said it was disingenuous to say anti-fascists alone incited violence.

“I do think there was a lot of anger over Charlottesville, as there should be,” Stryker said. “But I also think there was a sudden realization that many of the instigators in Charlottesville had been coming to Berkeley for months to beat up anti-fascists.”

Doesn't surprise me that Berkley has a problem with maniacal millennials, but no one will provide solutions...

Mark my words, "they" will want to destroy all traces of it, root and branch!
Burn all film and tapes, wipe all electronic files, and take a razor blade to all books that mention the Oscars it won!
:D

A minor (very) recurring theme on TMP is Peter Jackson having "in development" a remake of the Dambusters. I never saw it, but apparently the hero has a big black dog he calls "the n-word". There are those who will refuse to watch the movie, if it's ever made, if it is not an exact remake, including the dog's name.
Not that they would ever PAY to see it, even if it met their exacting criteria. No. Wait for it free on demand.

I took a girl to see GWTW way back in the previous century.
I haven't seen it since.
It was ok.
It didn't make me any more racist than I already was. :D
I did snort at the "Lawks a mercy!" stuff.

Taxi Driver and Titanic are fucked up stories, GwtW is trite, but shouldn't have been pulled, unless no one came to see it. All the movies in the Summer Classic Film Series could result in outrage, real or imagined, from one person or another over the slightest thing.

I saw it about a month ago. My sister-in-law had never seen it before so I put it on. I think it's on Amazon if you feel like firing it up.

If you're *that* kind of person, I guess. Why do you have such a hardon for GWTW, anyway?

One wouldn't have to go all that effort...

Besides, just pretend that the people being attacked were "inner city" and that the attackers were cops, and you'll feel better.

Violence: Wrong unless its the government.

FTFU. Nothing in my posts even suggest that as my position.[/quote]

I'll hold you to that, next time there's a police shooting.
