Problem is that its cold, boring and boring.

Australia might at least send you on a nice holiday to Nauru.

Oh, great. So, if my unemployed niece can round up the equivalent of three annual minimum wages, she can wash dishes in Hobbiton for a year before they kick her to the curb. You're right, Dr. Jack: that's right generous.

Glad to see you remain so positive.

Your choice to live there and its your choice to stand in front of people holding pepper spray.

DrJackson. It's everyone else's fault that a third rate American academic chose to quit the States and live in a Third World shithole. Haven't you got it yet?

That's not what he's saying at all.

Brazil isn't a shit hole. It has fallen on especially hard times and what is happening in Brazil may well be a portent for the future elsewhere, in fact, aspects of it are being mirrored elsewhere.

If you are anchored somewhere it's not a simple matter to walk away. Try getting your aged dependents into the UK, the US or Canada and see how that works for you. Try getting your partner in. Meanwhile, face the prospect of your salary becoming increasingly worthless as costs rise.

When this thing blew up last summer, he was talking about how difficult it would be to find a job in his field, and for his wife, who doesn't speak English. At the time, I earnestly offered to put him in touch with my niece, who is a professor of bilingual studies at a university here. I don't know what tangible help she could offer, but I thought it was worth a try. His response was to attack and insult me. Honestly, the goodwill I had accrued toward Mac up to that point took a pretty hard hit, then.

It's my choice not to abandon my family. Yours must sleep so soundly at night, knowing that their partner or father thinks running out on them is a viable option. Or haven't you bothered to share that side of your personality with them, Jacko?

Altius, I realize that you think your niece can help us out, but seriously: that is not how it works. You don't just get a job in academia based on virtually knowing someone on the internet who has a niece in field that has no connection to your own.

And given that you aren't a stupid man, and can probably figure that out for yourself, it's more than passing likley that you only brought your niece up in the first place in order to further take the piss.

Furthermore, I wasn't asking for help in the first place. I was pointing out what the current situation means to someone like me. And I was pointing out that immigration really isn't an option.

Most people would have gone with a variation of "thanks anyway", but I guess not you, Mac.

And who was suggesting she could line you up with a job, as if you swung a hammer or drove a truck? I thought a business contact might be a valuable resource to you in a lot of ways. That's the whole point of LinkedIn, after all.

Anyway, water under the bridge, at this point. You be you.

Stop projecting your own paranoia on others.

Sorry, it's not paranoia in your case - you're right: nobody like you
