Anyone know how that ended up?

Arnald.

Czechoslovakia splitting into the Czech Republic and Slovakia is about the only contemporary one that seems to be working so far.

Little Old Ireland left the United Kingdom, and is doing just fine.

How many years did it take for Ireland to drag itself out of the mire though? It was 80 odd years post independence before the Church lost its influence, & it took the advent of EU membership to put the economy on a sound footing. Or perhaps we could consider the Belgian secession of 1830? I was thinking of a shorter timespan to be honest.

It was in the mire, it dragged itself out. (Mainly through joining another extranational union, as you say.) It's a bit like blaming Russia's fucked-upness on the Soviets, or the Tsars, Or Vlad. It's fucked up and can only do it's best. You think if Ireland had remeained in the UK it would have modernised any faster? It was certainly never in Britain's interests to let them.

Yugoslavia do you? That's quite a good example. post disintegration, the bits that were nasty remain nasty, bits like Slovenia are doing rather well. In the end, a nation's destiny is moulded by slightly more important things than the surnames of the leaders. Nationalism at bottom is founded on the odd idea that Politicians will be better if they are the same 'Race' or 'Culture' as you, and is a good reason most Brits, pre Farrage, didn't actually give a shit either way about Europe. It was only when Nigel started playing his dog-whistle that they got enough votes to make Tory MP's shit themselves, and get us in the mess we are in now.

not exactly an unalloyed success though, which is what we were considering, mutually successful secessions.

ah, that was not part of his question. If you only want unalloyed success from a recent secession? No, not one I can think of. Can you think of an unalloyed success from a recent anything whatsoever?

Perhaps the North and South Sudanese are happier apart? Not something I can pretend to know anything about. Brony may be along to do so shortly though. 0;)
