A little hysterical in regards to Japanese nationalism and re-militarisation I think. It is more to do with the realisation that they will not necessarily get the support from the US in a crisis situation that they could have expected 20 years ago. Japan and Taiwan are coming to the realisation that they will most likely be thrown under the bus in the face of Chinese expansionism.

Hopefully now, they won't be caught with their pants down again when Godzilla shows up.
I'm not a bad man but in certain situations I have to ask myself - what would a bad man do?

How would the west react if all this went through? Do nothing I'd wager.
But if it kicks off with China I bet we'll be lining up with the japs like the suckers we are regardless.

New age, different allies.

China is the one posturing and gimping it up in the South China Sea now. About time Japan spent some dough on military hardware.

They'll be cheap enough, given the last 16 years of deflation Japan has had.

Well if that article is any indication of what the Japanese policy is going to be I hope we stay out of it and let the Chinese and Japanese have at it.

There was a board wargame released recently on Chinese aggression circa 2020 that is actually quite good and well-researched. The graphics are total shit, but the game is solid. Well worth a look if you are interested in Chinese naval potential. It is called "Breaking the Chains" by Compass Games. http://compassgames.com/show/product/breaking_the_chains

The beeb talking bollocks as usual. Not to speak of the nosedive in quality newsnights taken since the McAlpine farce. The Idea that a serious country like Japan should have a pacifist constitution is insane, and all because they were naughty in WW2. Yet we have rightly forgiven Germany and wouldnt dream of dredging up their past like this. Japan should do whats best for Japan because it really can't rely on 'the west'.

TBH I suspect this was really just an excuse for the beeb to have a pop at nationalism.

That constitution has worked pretty well and probably saved Japans neck.
Germany has apologised profusely and in detail for their war crimes, building museums and memorials to their victims and teaches it's children the truth. If mainstream politicians there were changing the history books and worshiping at far right wing shrines to Nazi war criminals I assume Europe would have the brains to be concerned like the east is over Japan.
