No the main reason why it doesn't look like it's floating is because it's not :wink:
then again I'm with blackfly, I don't really get the point

Ok, I'll have a bash at another sort of shape and like you suggest have a go with different colour woods. However, if you were in the market for a plinth, what would you buy?

Not with the top bit.

I'd want that to be a floating menhir, or wizard on a large shield

Bevel the bottom out of the top piece, Turn the lower piece into a wider cone shape. Use a steel pin/screw to attach them together (this will allow you to vary the angle of the top piece). Slight slant looks more floatier :)

I would have thought magnets would be the way to go to have a floating plinth?
