From one of the Trollop books, set in the "Mr. Darcey" days IIRC so previous century (I would guess, surely not two centuries back?!) It's main value is the quaint placenames..Winter Overcotes, Winter Underclose, Eiderdown, Fleece,Pomfret Madrigal, etc. It's got stately homes; the local trade unions are obviously weavers, and similar; there is a river for Mr. Hick's water rats to lurk about; there is a school (Reform School for Girls). I've just got to work out the politics of the various toffs and work out the factions and go from there. Easy as cake, as they say! :D

Piece of.

That's a neat idea, I might steal The Archers maps of Ambridge on a similar basis.

For VBCW purposes there were a few scattered communities that were very much aligned to one of the fringe religious denominations. Nearby here there has been a Moravian Church dominated village (Ockbrook) for centuries, a Theosophical Community with a school and a herbal medicine manufacturer that still exist today, and near to Sheffield I know of a significant group of British Israelites (whom I met through grave-digging oddly enough). The 1930s was the heyday of religious exploration with groups of all denominations taking advantage of the movement away from the established church following the Great War. You could plausibly have any kind of Christian group, Quakers, Unitarians, Theosophists, Buddhists, Hindus, Taoists, Hermeticists, Witches, Druids or just about any other faction in your games. Of course the mainstream religions would be the most likely but there is much fun to be had opposing the Anglican League with screaming hordes of Theosophists.
