I's not just economics any more though - if they try to hunt and pay the fines later they're also shipping out without any legal cover so they're absolutely open to the intervention of other parties without causing diplomatic issues.

Sounds like a job for privateers!

Now, where can I find myself a big boat with a cannon cheap?
I'm not a bad man but in certain situations I have to ask myself - what would a bad man do?

Angry middle class English women will not only sink your boat but they'll get the chrimbo decorations taken down from your town centres.

Honour is not a word I used, but when it comes to complying with obligations, they are actually pretty inflexible. They are quite ashamed of appearing to do other than what they are supposed to in a given situation. I think it has something to do with rigid social structure and the strong obligations of social roles.

Which is all tied to 'honour' and not losing face.

But what constitutes honour is, like I said, somewhat bendy. Rape of Nanking, Burma Railway? Comfort girls? Refusal to apologise?

The Japanese will do what the fuck they like to satisfy themselves and their own perverted sense of right, and they don't give a monkey's what the world think. If that means whale continue dying to please the domestic market, then it's tough shit cetaceans.

I find that rather refreshing actually.

Of course there's a difference between honour as a verb and as a noun. They're not interchangable. They do indeed honour their commitments but they don't always behave with honour.

Ah I see. Meanwhile ....

The Japanese domestic market don't like whale meat all that much and don't care from what I've heard. It's all some idiot pollies who insist they have the right to do it, have backed it to the hilt despite no one liking the stuff and half the world being pissed off, and won't back down because, lets face it, they'd loose face. So they keep the scandal out of the media and stuff kids lunch boxes with whale blubber and do their darndist to commit political seppuku.
