I did once see a program about an ethnic enclave of ex-Americans living in Brazil. Their ancestors were southerners who were unhappy with the result of the ACW so they headed for the jungles of South America, characteristically keeping themselves separate from their browner neighbors. Now, a century and a half later, their descendants call themselves Americans, even though few of them still speak English, and every year they hold a cotillion that looks straight out Gone With the Wind, proudly flying the Stars and Bars. It didn't inspire any resentment in me, but I do remember wishing that someone would explain to these poor people what the significance of that flag is (although in fairness, we, as a nation, tend to send mix messages about it). They weren't doing it out of any malice or sense of irony. They had just mythologized and romanticized certain elements of their background. But that's no skin off my nose. Hell, even I could see that there are distinct differences between them and their fellow Brazilians.

Having looked at them they seem like a perfectly nice bunch of people, who just like to celebrate one of the aspects of their culture occasionally.
