Strictly Art

You get the feeling that the viewer voting talent show format has run its course when you see something like this. It was emailed to me from the Artist & Illustrator's website earlier:

Got a passion for painting and drawing? The BBC wants to hear from you!
A new BBC One series is in the pipeline that promises to be painting’s answer to Strictly Come Dancing, giving amateur artists the chance to compete on national TV. And the BBC has reached out to Artists & Illustrators in its search for contestants.

The BBC production team is currently on the look out for the UK’s best amateur painters, so if you are over 16 with a passion for painting and drawing, you could be eligible to star in this exciting new series.

In order to apply, you must not be working as a professional artist and you will be expected to show proficiency in a range of different subjects and mediums, from still life, landscape and portraiture, to oils, watercolours and charcoal.

The exact nature of the challenges has yet to be revealed and all other details about the show are still under wraps. In fact, BBC publicist Sheryl Holland couldn’t even reveal the show’s title. “At the moment, we’re steering clear of using a working title for the series as it’s still a work-in-progress,” she told us.

We will have plenty of updates about the programme later in the year, but in the meantime, see below to find out how you can apply to become a contestant.

HOW TO APPLY
If you want to apply to become a contestant on this new BBC One series, you must provide the following:

- Your name, address, age, occupation and phone number
- A recent photo of yourself
- Up to three images that best represent the range of your artwork (send photos or prints, not originals)
- A short paragraph about why you paint

Send all of this to the BBC via one of two ways:

EMAIL amateurartist@bbc.co.uk
POST Amateur Artist, MC5 A6, BBC Media Centre, Wood Lane, London W12 7TQ

The deadline for applications is 23 March 2014.

If they do it right, it could actually be quite good, but most likely it'll be a big, steaming turd filled with fake tension and even faker emotional backstories.

Yarp. It sounds a bit bollocks really…

Ever see America's Next Great Artist? It was quite compelling, but was essentially a personality contest. I imagine the BBC will do something weaker still.

Shame.

I might send them something in as a bit of a wind-up.

A plan is formulating in my twisted, little mind....

Now that would be funny if someone like that were voted winner!

But like Monkeyborg has said, it will just be a crapper version of the US show.

Art is pretty much dead in Britain I thought? Read an article somewhere you're better off being in Germany or something for art.

I mean you have the Tate Modern here, granted. But it's full of shit.

these people really do just sit in a room with a list of current hits and shout random words until one sticks don't they?

'The Great British Wank-off' Now that would be good if made with ladies rather than gentlemen. And without Sue Perkins. Guhhhh

'Downton Midwives' where the whole cast of Downton have miscarriages and die covered in Blood and mucus.

'Strictly Come' - same as the Wank-off, but on a dance floor with sequins and a Professional Partner

Is Sue Perkins the lesbian one or the one with the classic British teeth?

I think it was either Andy Jacobs or Paul Hawksby from Talk Sport radio who was once in programme development. In one meeting someone raised the idea for a show a bit like Big Brother but one of the contestants would have a contagious disease that they would have to try and spread to the rest of the participants.

Little known fact - Lesbianism causes Brtitish teeth. It's either the constant tongue motion, gradually distorting them, or the brillo-like effect of 70's minge. Next time you meet a lady what bowls over-arm, inspect her teeth and then tell me I am wrong.

Someone made that one already - just no-one has told the other competitors in Big Brother they all have nits.
