Why did i buy a PS4?

Now chaps some advice... and be nice! ;)

The boy wanted a PS4 and I foolishly said that if he could save half the price i would match him!

Sadly the little git managed it and i am now the 'proud' owner of a 'next gen' console!

But... can anyone explain to me what all the fuss is about?

As i'm struggling to see what it does above a 7 year old wii!

It is also so damn ugly, i tried hiding it away in the TV cabinet but the damn thing seems to use as much energy as a randy Chernobyl and was about to spontaneously combust so now has to sit staring at me in its ugly lop-sided manner!

All very underwhelming so far and am hoping you can all tell me how great it is/will be!

Also at nigh on fifty quid a pop for a game it may not get as much use as the boy was hoping!

Did think at least (being 'next gen' and all uber-techy) that i'd at least be able to network it and use as a media server... nope... seems Sony are being their usual proprietary cuntish selves!

Oh well you live and learn.

Cheers
Ev

Aren't you meant to play online with them or something?

I can imagine that would be good fun - having a shoot out with your mates. I suppose. Oh, I see from your last bit that you can't do that. That's a bit shitty.

Demand your son buy your share off you or tell him you'll sell your half to someone else. At least that way you'll get your money back. If he cries then rub your chin ruefully whilst telling him, 'well, that's a valuable lesson you've learnt in financial assets there, my son...'

Oh, you can network and play against the worlds population of idiot savants, but for a forty something misanthrope this isn't exactly enjoyable! ;)

Was tho hoping I could network to all my mp3's and movies... but sadly it seems not.

Oh well at least the boy seems happy 'fucking shit up'

Cheers

That's the problem. The Wii was designed for people who aren't into video games.

You need to read this old frothers thread to see why your lad wanted a PS4, rather than a Xbox One:

viewtopic.php?f=15&t=44156

It's now the cool console to have, much preferable to the Xbox One. I've noticed that my local CEX has been getting quite a few people part-exchanging their XboxOne's for a PS4 since Christmas.

But what you've actually done, without realising it, is increase your son's rep amongst his peers at school by about 1000%

So pat yourself on the back, you're a good father!

"Why did I buy a PS4?"

Or really what you mean to say is "why did both my son and I buy a PS4 together..."

Because you made a deal with your son that if he could put up half the cost you'd match it and procure a PS4 presumably for his enjoyment. I mean what did you think you'd ever do with it? Consoles suck apart from entertaining and or being a reward for the kiddies when they've done their homework, etc.

Also if the games are £50 a pop, well maybe persuade him to buy the console outright from you, and use those funds to secretly buy some new games for him.

I'm sure you're joking but it's a bit harsh thinking about selling off the other half to someone else!

Whatevs really. Stick to a pc and pirate games.

Hope I wasn't too nasty.

Install Tversity or PS3Mediaserver on your PC and stream to the PS4. I assume it works like a PS3 will.

Resogun. Its free if you have PSN+. Outlast too, but it wasn't my cup of tea as I don't like survival first person games. Also, Resogun.

Which means it isn't free.

Playstation Plus has never appealed to me because paying a monthly sub just to get a few free dog shit indy titles that would have done better 20 years ago isn't worth the money. I know they occasionally have the odd decent game but again it's not worth the money in the long run. I'm glad Sony haven't pulled a dick move and made it so that you 'need' PS Plus.

I understand your point, but to me the cloud storage that I get is worth the price of admission, so I can vaguely classify the rest as 'free'. Early access to some demos and betas is worth it to some, but not to me. I also like the ability of auto-update, though I feel that should be a 'free feature'. However....

Arguing taste here is going to be hard as if you are just looking for CoD/Battlefield and don't want anything else, yes its not worth it. However, psn+ is great for picking up mid-tier games that I look at and say 'I should buy that' but never got around to it. Just in the past year (2013), PSN+ highlights, again for me your results may differ:

X-Com
DarkSiders
Spec Ops: The Line
Saints Row The Third
Ico HD
Shadows Of The Colossus HD
Little Big Planet Carting
Sleeping Dogs
Borderlands 2

All of those are retail shrink wrap games (Borderlands, and Saints Row are AAA easily, X-Com was one of 2012's best), no indy download only. So adding in those:

Resogun
Hotline Miami (Could be in my top 10 of all time. YMMV).
Jet Set Radio HD
The Cave

I count thirteen. I'm leaving off Hitman: Absolution, Uncharted 3, Kingdoms Of Amalur, Deus Ex: Human Revolution all of which where multi million sellers in shrink wrap as I already owned Uncharted 3, and don't really care about the other three. So: $3 a game? Worth it to me. This year I've already picked up Metro, DMC, Bioshock Infinite, Payday 2 and 'shitty indy game' Brothers (Which was on a lot of top ten for 2013 lists). Sadly I already owned Bioshock, but its looking pretty good this year too.
