You don't realize what this means. They're not sequestering themselves in their own tiny enclave. They're simply expanding the empire.

In my little corner of heaven, there are at least 4 or 5 channels that qualify as 'women's channels', but that's in addition to the myriad of women-centric shows scattered all over the dial.

Well, to be fair, it's really an even split between women channels/shows and redneck channels/shows. At least you don't have to deal with those.

yes we do, the 'History' channel is showing a series about some swamp bloke down in Louisiann or some such, along with storage wars texas, a show about gator hunting etc, trust me, you're exporting it too

Pfft 90% of adverts are aimed at women, making a channel aimed at them is going to make them a killing in advertising payments.

TV is dire these days. There is a reason it didn't used to be on 24hrs a day. They knew quality over quantity.

But yes, A bit of me died when the TLC channel turned upon UK telly. Now even more countryfuls of credulous eejits can be hooked on Honey Boo Boo and other dungheap-dredging programming.

I think it's sadder that trash TV and scripted reality shows are the mainstay of channels that once tried to actually teach viewers something. The Learning Channel is just utter dog shit now, the Discovery Channel is at least half trash and The History Channel is just as bad. Honest documentaries are butted up against imbeciles waffling on about ancient aliens.

I watched this thing about mermaid cover-ups recently. Started off thinking it was by a bunch of cryptozoo cranks, and as soon as they brought up the old aquatic ape thing I burst out laughing. I got that it was made up long before the daft horror-movie-scare 'video evidence' was played.

Saddest thing is that while I watched it on the aforementioned TLC (that well-known outlet for scientific discoveries of the century), it originally went out on Animal Planet and the Discovery Channel.

Andy Foster tweeted this a couple of days ago. I joked that #1 wasn't too unreasonable. But I'm right, if I say so meself - when you see Attenborough in a documentary, and more specifically a Beeb doc, you know it's going to be one of the last bastions of quality and not sensationalist bullshit.

I don't even watch the History Channel anymore, which I'm assuming has the same programming schedule here in the US as you have there. I remember when it used to be all black & white WWII documentaries and shows about ancient warfare featuring the same 20 extras waving swords at each other. Although, I was shocked to see a 2-hour program about Egyptian building techniques last week. Made me feel light-headed and disoriented just seeing it on the schedule.

It's fascinating and somewhat depressing to hear that we are exporting all the redneck shows to you. It's a bit like the first time I flew to Europe and saw a KFC just outside the airport. We're really not showing our best side! Well, like the neighbor whose dog just shat on your rug, I'm so damned sorry.
