We're also making our fair share of bullshit TV in the UK as well so don't feel too bad Altius.

Bullshit.
If you don't like what they broadcast then don't turn the idiot box on.
If you stop watching it then they stop broadcasting it. Don't sit there wathcing it like an obedient slave just to complain about it when you could be doing something more constructive with your time. They don't own you. Get rid of your TV and take your life and independence back. But if you sit there and watch it, then don't complain about it - no one is forcing you to watch it or even own a TV.

I don't. But it's difficult to avoid continual reminders of their existence in a bunch of little ways. And if you haven't noticed, we're complaining that too many other people in couch-potato land gobble them up. You want to squawk at someone, go round to their gaffs and try it on them. Come back when you've made any progress. ;)

just to complain about it when you could be doing something more constructive with your time.

I have the TV on when I'm sculpting or painting. Sometimes I have a dvd or the radio on. But usually it's the TV. On which I watch shows I like, or don't mind. Which I get to by scrolling through listings full of crap, and sitting through ads and trailers for crap, which I sometimes can't help noticing. (It's this whole sensory perception thing, Humph. I don't know how to describe it to a solid lump of antique oak like yourself, but it's terribly inconvenient at times.)

Quite.
I wouldn't want to deny TV to anyone. If you like it then fill your boots. Each to their own.
But I feel short shrift for people who complain about something (anything) that is entirely optional and pretty much a luxury that they don't have to do (i.e. watch TV).
For the good programmes you miss you can always watch them (for free!) on things such as BBC iplayer.

I suppose we all create our own realities. It just seems a poor reality if you fill your life with something you dislike. There is an 'off' button when there's nothing you like watching. And then, as you rightly say, you can put on the radio, or a DVD, or maybe just listen to the sounds outside like the wind and trees and the birds. And sometimes just enjoy the silence. Whatever you like - but don't complain if you choose to do the thing you don't like.

You bloody tool! Nobody is forcing themselves to watch hours of shit telly because they 'don't have a life' or are too brainwashed to do otherwise. It's just when you do fancy having a mooch through the channels you realise it's mostly shit and what little good programming there is (because you can learn a hell of a lot from some TV programmes) tends to be boxed in by utter garbage. There's nothing wrong with a bit of a moan about something that could be so good and useful but which ends up being lazily made to pander to a majority that seemingly doesn't want to be stimulated. My not watching bullshit TV shows isn't going to stop production companies making that shit.

What Doremi said. I watch between 30 minutes and 5-6 hours of TV per week usually (depending whether there is rugby on or not). I would watch a little more if there were more decent programmes.

As I pay a licence fee (as should anyone who watches BBC iplayer) I will continue to moan about formerly excellent programmes like Horizon packaging a 15 minute idea in a one hour format with lingering filler shots and multiple recaps to fit the advertising rich resale market.

I have no rose tinted spectacles about the ‘good old days’ of British TV - for every half hour of Monty Python or hour of Michael Wood's Dark Ages there were hours of The Two Ronnies, Cannon and Ball, Little and Large, Love Thy Neighbour and The Golden Shot.

I just had a hope that there might be a resurgence of things like Chronicle or Arena but they don’t seem to pull in as many viewers as von Daniken's Celebrity Ancient Aliens, so the money goes there.

When they bring back '15-to-1' then I'll get a TV again.
