I know it's an often asked question but I figured I'd ask the question again.

Reason being, I'd like to be able to take photos without relying on others that have the equipment and spare time to give me a hand.

So, what's on the menu of affordable digital cameras for taking nice sharp shot of minis for people that are totally shit at such things such as myself.

there are a lot of cameras available, and most of them will do the job
but the most important thing is to have a proper area with good lighting in order to have decent miniature photos
and a tripod so that you leave the camera still and take photos with the cameras timer

I've got a decent camera but I can't find the cable thingy so invariably I use my iPhone for everything, most of the pictures that you'd've seen of my work in the last couple of years were taken on an iPhone, not saying its a fantastic camera by any means, just that you can take a decent pic on anything if you know what you're up to.

Affordable? Ehhh... i bought a rather expensive close up lens for a semi expenaive camera i already owned with a cheap tripod and lighting and i still use my phone mostly. Depth of field and focal length is just too much money to do right, but your phone is subsidised already.

You don't need a tripod, any raised level surface will do, a memo pad is perfect.

I use a Canon PowerShot SX120 but they do not seem to make them any more

I agree that you don't need a tripod, as you can use the 2 second timer to avoid any camera shake (that's what it's there for ). You don't even need a massive pixel count. As long as the camera has a decent optical zoom (not just digital zoom), you'll be fine. There are many cheap, second-hand compacts available above 5mp that would do the job well.

I just got a little home studio kit with back drop, lightbox, lamps etc stu, you are welcome to borrow them if you want when you get a camera

Doesn't really matter what camera you have as any of the modern digitals (within reason) should be capable of taking a photo with good enough image quality. Tripod beats fixed stand (finer adjustment to heights, angles etc), fixed stand beats hand held (more solid base so less chance of movement).

of course not, but you can buy a mini one by less than £10


and not only is it better adjustable, but it also permits you to have a fixed configuration (if you mark the spot where the tripod is)

anyway, for me the better improvement to be done is to have a good light kit (it doesn't mean an expensive one), but to have a proper backdrop and a couple of lights

I think it's better for you to try to make some experiments with your current camera and a proper setup, and see the improvements in your photos
