Mandela was originally all for peaceful protest, it was only after the shooting of unarmed protestors that he began advocating armed resistance. He said that at that period of his life he felt that Ghandi only got away with non violence because the British were at core a civilised people who could be negotiated with, while the Afrikaans were barbarians who only understood force.
