Dave Vanian used to work at a cemetery in Hemel Hempstead and dressed as a vampire, although his habit of whistling Alice Cooper's 'Dead Babies' during his work possibly puts him in the vaudeville tradition rather than the gothic. Before he joined The Damned, he was in a band called Masters of the Backside which featured Chrissie Hynde dressed as a boy and whipping the rest of the musicians on stage with a cane while they played 'Gimme Some Loving'.

You people are all old cos I don't get none of this, never had any goths where I were. And if there was one around it'd blatantly escaped from the city.

Oddly enough I don't remember the actual term Goth being used in the early 80s. Mostly that sort of thing was referred to as "post-punk" or "sort of gothic punk" or just "punk". I guess the term got coined a bit later.

I remember the term appearing in the late 80s and early nineties to describe those who were typically goth in look.

The fact that Duff has started wandering around the place in a fishnet vest and eyeliner really hasn't improved matters :|

The Captain and Scabies met when they worked as toilet cleaners for Croydon Council. Four years later I got a job working as a toilet cleaner for Croydon Council, and just like them I, er, ah, went to lots of Damned gigs?

Yeah, "Gothic Punk" was what people used to say. I guess it got abbreviated later.
