Science is brilliant, i am a bit obsessed by the stuff about other planets and solar systems - i blame Star Wars when i was a kid for that!
The anti-science ideas from religion are pretty much all coming from the right-wing fundamentalists nutters in America. Not all religions, including Christians, believe or insist on this absolutist interpretation of holy scriptures. The US loons just have the loudest voices at the moment.
Religion has it's place in some people's lives and shouldn't be condemned because of a small group (see Wahabist/extreme Muslims as another example)trying to impose its will on you. If you don't like it, ignore it. Unless they are trying to kill you of course! (or ruin your country - Americans vote Democrat please :wry: )

Exactly.

The Theory of Evolution, the Theory of Gravity, etc. These are not things that we "believe" in. They are what we think based on the best evidence available. There is no equivalency between scientific understanding and belief.

Believers wish there was. They will claim: "You believe that the Earth is 4.5 million years old and that life evolved. I believe that the world is 6,016 years old and life was created as is by a magic space pixie." But of course, this attempt to equate is bollocks. For the majority, we would accept creationism if the evidence pointed that way; it doesn't so we don't accept it. It is not about belief, it is not about choosing something that we wish was true. It is about accepting evidence or ignoring evidence and believing something else.

I don't think it's just the extremists who are an issue. The moderates are a far larger group within most religions and whilst it may be the extremist's screeching we hear most, it's the ignorance of the moderate and their willingness to fall in line with their ideology that can prove far more destructive. The extremist might call for a ban on the teaching of evolution in science classes but the moderate might suggest that both evolution and creationism be taught (teach the controversy). Neither choice is acceptable for the science class and only leads to greater ignorance and the stunting of any societies development.

I mentioned in a similar thread a while ago about a quote from Dawkins regarding a visit to a British Muslim faith school. He met a staff who were teaching the bare minimum of science that the British curriculum demanded (to ensure the schools existence) and there was no mention of evolution in their lessons. 300 students (I think I misquoted it as 3000 in my post) were being taught there and when he asked some about about their science lessons he was told that the Quran contained all the science they needed. I doubt very much whether any of the staff or students were extremists in any way.

Actually that only works whilst there is one theory.

When there are several different theories to explain the same thing. Then what you have is scientists that 'follow' or 'believe' or 'agree' that one theory has more weight than another.

There are certainly grey areas.
