The North Wind Doth Blow

Take care, chaps.

My bags are packed.

Inside I have a large ice axe, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens at the airport. I phoned ahead to tell them, but they said so long as I make them aware at check-in, and as long as it’s not in hand luggage, and that I have documentation to prove why I have it, all is fine. We’ll see. I don’t think I’ll bother bringing it back into the UK (it’ll be more trouble than it’s worth) – I’ll give it away to someone over there.

Polar bears have been seen about 20km from where we are heading, although we have been told the chances of encountering them are more or less zero. I don’t want to take risks, but I’d love to see them. The wildlife is one of the things I’m most excited about.

We have three days of acclimatisation and then seven days in the Arctic circle to place some instruments to measure the depth of the ice.

A busy few weeks ahead - back to work the day after I get back so may not be around for some time.

the interesting thing about that quote, I think, is that the actual tents were designed to be sealed (ie the doors closed and tied close) from the inside. This means that the men inside knew that he was going away quietly to die. (and someone tied the knots in that knowledge)..

Food for thought I'd say.

Still... its all zips, velcro and storm flaps these days. :D

I am (seriously) jealous as hell. Have a good one fella!

One of the guys I work with was an avid hiker. Him and about a dozen of his friends hiked up Mt Rainier in the western US. They were expecting to stay about half a day and then hike down through the evening. Freak snow storm kicked up and stranded them there for about 5 days. He lost all his toes and good chunks of his feet to frost bite. He says he was one of the lucky ones though compared to what others lost.

Ah, you're a proper little David Attenborough, aren't you? 0;)

Have fun! I'm not jealous, no, not at all...
