Hull's not great, and Birmingham isn't much better, but the worst shithole I've ever been to in the UK is Swansea. And I'm not just saying that to troll the Welsh; Cardiff is fine, North Wales is lovely, Swansea is a stinking dump.

(I actually like Norwich and have relatives in Fakenham and a couple of other parts of Norfolk. But don't tell anyone you six-fingered freak.)

I won't don't worry. But Fakenham - that's pretty much out there in the sticks! Nice place though. Just don't go troubling the farmers.

My wife grew up in one of the Barsham villages (total population of all three is about 55). Fakenham was the big city to them. It's OK to visit once or twice a year but I couldn't live there. And it has the Kinnerton factory: horrid rancid fake chocolate that tastes of puke and makes the whole area smell bad.

Ehh... as a non-native who's travelled around a bit I feel I can objectively call it a dead heat between Hull, Newport, and large swathes of Birmingham and environs, Manchester, and Newcastle. Doncaster's shit too. So is Nottingham. Oh, and fuck me I forgot Coventry, jaysus. Also Southampton. Every former mining town. Most of Ireland. Dead heat. Probably Thatcher's fault.

Being born in swansea and spending a large amount of my life there I wish I could argue that Swansea wasn't a shit hole. Of course I would be wrong, but at least its not Newport.

Even worse than Swansea are all the shithole little towns between there and Cardiff judging by the tweens that pile onto the train.
