He's right about one thing - a lot of masks you see people wearing are next to fucking useless. Those stupid 'fashion' masks (God bless capitalism and it's ability to make money during a crisis) are a waste of money. Worst of all are those home made cloth maks you see people (especially the old - the last demographic that needs to be taking a risk) wearing. Those aren't helping anyone.
Most of the masks you see people wearing are little more than a placebo.

Well I'm not a fan of the silver bullet theory of mask wearing (Wear this and all will be well my son) but even a bog standard cloth mask will stop you accidentally gobbing on people while you shout the odds in the street.

As for the carefully crafted scientific reports that claim upwards of 80% protection - well, read the reports not the journalistic events - you can't replicate those results away from the lab.

One extra tip - try not drooling on and licking cheap replicas of 52 year old film props.

And it gets even worse, because there's every chance they wear them day after day, taking them on and off. Which means that as they take them on and off (and you can bet it's with bare hands) they've been spreading the virus if they've come into contact with it or if they have it themselves and are asymptomatic.
Unless you are cleansing your hands before and after touching that mask, you are wasting your time. Ideally they should be disposed of each time you take it off.
Home made cloth masks should be banned.
And shops selling a pack of 10 clinical masks for £5+ should be prosecuted for something or other.

Nonsense. Any cloth mask reduces droplet traffic which is the main source of infection, thus reducing the exponential rise in cases. It also provides some degree of protection to the user. It's quite possible, I suppose, that cloth masks produced by the "fashion" industry or by "frugal old biddies" have a measurable difference in effectiveness. Perhaps you should fund a study.

Yes, for two reasons.
Firstly, the unashamed way that shops and suppliers are seeking to take advantage over public fears and see it just as a way of making money.
Secondly, because such important items as effective masks should be a priority of the government and therefore prices regulated so that people can afford to get adequate protection and not resort to inappropriate methods (such as cloth masks).

Can I ask what size droplet will not be stopped by close weave cloth over the mouth and nose?

My understanding is that even surgical masks and N95 masks while reducing droplet forward projection still leak around the edges, allowing smaller (often called aerosol - which is the differentiation I was alluding to above) particles to escape and spread in the turbulent air created by sneezing/shouting/coughing. Many dense weave cloth masks do the same. Admittedly allowing more side leakage and aerosol spread.
