If he was claiming that your argument was wrong because of your academic status then you would be right, but all he is in fact doing is saying with that particular post is that your style of posting is long winded and lacking content, which is a fairly common trait of much academic writing (or at least the common perception of it), so it's fair usage of the term. Plus you do tend to waffle on a lot Mac.

Unless you mean ad hominem to simply mean an attack or insult as opposed to a fallacious argument of course, in which case you're on the wrong forum.

The "ad hominem" part comes in when he claims that this is because of academia. That is the entirety of his claim. And why is this? Because he's read my academic work or knows anything at all about my career or my field? No: because of "academia" and "soft-science". The ad hominem here is directed against the field: it is bad because it is bad, because of -- as you point out -- commonly imagined traits about it, not because of any proof regarding it or my academic writing.

It's like saying "You act the way you do because you're a Jew and Jews are all ursurious shysters." The misreperesentation of Jews as a stereotype stands in for any argument based on logic regarding the person's behavior. The ad hominem stands, though: it is attacking someone based on what they supposedly are, not on the content of their actions or ideas.

Without having read a single academic article of mine, Pestie claims that they are useless and long-winded because of, well, the character of academia and what he amusingly refers to as "soft sciences".
