I just can't help but think most of the 'LEO' types on TMP, the ex-military and all their uncritical fans are getting to reap the whirlwind they have sown. And I hate the term 'LEO' it's just another part of the macho bullshit that has gone along with SWAT, and body armour, and police behaving like there are police and potential enemies and nothing in between.

It's the casual violence of thugs in uniform deciding that a film crew needs to be shot with rubber bullets at close range, or shooting at someone sitting on their porch with a phone.

As for warrior culture, fuck that. They're the ones with big guns, armoured vehicles, body armour and thousands of pals, but they seem terrified of a few unarmed teenagers with placards.

I know plenty of police and ex police, but those guys aren't police by any normal definition, they're an occupying army.

Indeed; it is all just part of the macho bullshit culture that so many on the Right of American politics engage in. Now the Orange Goblin is threatening to send in the army to sort out the protesters, having tear gassed peaceful protesters so that he can get a photo-op holding a bible by a church; it is like watching a failed banana republic.

The irony of so many people in the most aggressively and repressively policed country in the Western developed world shouting about how much more free they are than anyone else can only be lost on those who do understand irony.

The wanker discovered some psychological work on why people won't kill (to some extent subsequently challenged if not discredited)and turned it into a theory to make ordinary people lose their inhibitions to pull the trigger in combat (Marshal plus if you like, yaddah, yaddah).
Which is great and to be fair somewhere in 'On Killing'he devotes half a page recognising you need to reverse the programme when you release Johnny back into the wild.

Problem was he wanted to make money when he left he Army so he started peddling the stuff to 'Law Enforcement' who bought the whole 'Warrior Spirit' shit wholesale but didn't bother buying the other half of the package telling them about reintegration into society, which would be bad enough for the military, but for people supposed to be policing the community is a fucking disaster.

Interestingly he started life as a sergeant in the 82nd Airborne - you don't suppose he's a friend of Ralph do you?

There is inherent violence in the American psyche that is probably rooted in their relatively recent frontier past; this gets passed down through generations as part of what it means to be an American male and so impacts those who do not have a family history of that period. Given the type of people who tend to become police officers/sheriffs/marshals/whatever in the USA, they are almost certainly more inclined towards aggression and violence than is the norm.

Reinforcing that through the idea that it is "us against them" and some imbued bollocks about the "Warrior Spirit" only exacerbatess an already toxic worldview.

Joining the police is often the next move if you leave the army (ARMY - sorry Ralph) so they already have had that whole warrior thing instilled in them.
