I don?t know who or what?s to blame and I don?t see how blaming helps. The situation is what it is and it?s no good pretending America?s murder problem is just caused by the availability of firearms. There are too many aspects of the situation this doesn?t explain. Mass shootings are only one part of it, focusing on them is like decrying airline safety because when a plane goes down a lot of people all die at once.

While what you might call ?private murder?, the killing of a relative out of passion or for gain and murder by lunatics are something which always has and always will be with us, predatory murder is something which largely results from social forces. Social alienation obviously makes it worse. I think the higher rate of murder which America has always had is largely because America is an unsettled society. Compared to Europe most of America gives the impression of having been just flung up, as though we only expect to be here temporarily. What little attempt there was to form a common culture and history failed under the social re-examination of the 1960?s. It was small loss as it was an official, contrivance, more like something promulgated by a despotic regime than grown organically. Maybe in a millennium or so America will form a culture or the world will just be one culture but until then we are going to be unstable.

Not that instability is altogether a curse, the positive side of instability is dynamism, America has that too.

I think he?s trying to explain why over half the murders in the U.S. are committed by Americans who identify themselves as of African descent (this though their genetic pool is over 1/3 European) only 12% of the population. Even when you control for income and location (suburb, city, small town) the murder rate for African-Americans is several times that for other groups. The murder rate for Americans who identify themselves as of European descent is only fractionally higher than for Europeans in Europe even though Americans obviously have many more guns.

I think what he's trying to say is that he's a racist twat without actually saying he's a racist twat. And neatly sidestepping the issue at the same time.

How many mass murders by gun are committed by African Americans, or Latinos, or Asians? How many of your seemingly popular school shootings?
