The monarchy have long since been an anachronism and should be abolished after the current queen calls it a day.

The whole of the British General public tend to feel that an unelected little old lady who lives in a Palace is a rather better Head of State than the sort of cunts that would win a presidential election.

A majority of the British public probably agree with the second statement but significant numbers agree with the first.

But the size of the majority in favour of the Royal Family is sufficient to ensure that no mainstream political party will adopt republicanism as a policy. This might well change when the current occupant of the throne shuffles of this mortal coil.

The general public voted for Brexit, voted for Trump, watch prime time Saturday night TV, buy Ed Sheeran CDs, voted for the Nazis.
The general public have long since shown their worth on matters.

Yes, my point exactly. It’s hardly a demanding role, perhaps best we entrust it to a half-mad elderly german lady rather than to whoever the Great British Public would select.

I DO object to the idea that her offspring and their spouses are entitled to some form of respect – but that’s hardly a phenomenon limited to anachronistic England – just ask George W Bush, Hilary Clinton or Justin Trudeau.

For Australia I'd like to see the Queen dropped and just keep the governor general, have them represent "the people" or democracy, or truth, justice and the Australian way, anything suitably abstract and nonthreatening that we could declare sovereign, A much less risky King Log than the Royals, things could go on pretty much as they are with the GG as the a political figurehead, and if we manage to fuck up and chose a loony at the very least we don't have to wait for Him/Her to croak before we're rid of them and we don't have to hand over the reins of power to their kid when they're gone.
Couldn't something like that work for the UK?

I presume you voted 'Leave'?
Getting rid of something without thinking what would replace it a habit is it sir?

Yes I know the whole Royal Family thing looks like an anachronism, and she certainly seems to be a rubber stamp at best in the current debacle, but what replaces her and them? At least having her involved points out to the populace at large that something odd, unconstitutional and probably illegal is going on with de Pfeffel (and not just in his trousers).

I don't need someone to go round shooting things for me but I could do with a constitutional sheet anchor - an apolitical embodiment of the sovereignty of the Queen in Parliament to keep an eye on the overmighty Executive.

Come up with a good way of allowing the elected Executive to govern without completely overwhelming the legislature (and vice versa) then get back to me on binning the monarchy.

(As for Charles, I should imagine he will be accidentally savaged by an Organic Duchy Haggis if he does anything too weird)

Give me King Log any day, rather than King Stork. Or Russel Brand? Nigel Farrage?

And do you think Charlie will be content to keep his head down and his mouth shut like mummy dearest?
I think his heart is probably in the right place but how long before he puts his foot in it? Or how long before he's suckered in the political shitstorm by this new and less reverent seeming and certainly less scrupled and less prudent seeming crop of politicians? :fear:

I fear Royal impartiality might not survive the succession.

That would be my preference as well but the royals are still supposedly (judging by what I see in the media) very popular here, I heard some older people mention the other day that the queens speech made her look foolish and was quite surprised and thinking of the post I quoted above wondered if that was how Britons felt as well.

I heard a proud Pom say the other day that he though the United Kingdoms would be a thing of the past in ten years as each country went it's own way...

Fuck, every nation in the western world except for Kiwi land has turned into a right wing shithole. :(

So what do the general British public think of the queen getting sucked into this mess?
