From H.G. Wells to H.P. Lovecraft:*
* * The third edition of FU!UK's renowned annual sculpting contest has ended! Check out the results below and go see all the entries in the galleries to the right: Inmates: Things
That Lurk in the Dark: Asylum
Staff: Visitors
& Interlopers: As always, the aim of the contest is to receive submissions of original sculpts from you (the frother community), which will then be judged by a team of renowned frothers from different corners of the hobby. The winning sculpts will be sold in the webshoppe for all frothers to buy. As a special treat, we've asked Woteva Games - a real company - to develop a boardgame specifically for this contest, which will be made available as a free download with every order for the contest figures. The aim is to incorporate the winning sculpts directly into the background of the game. You can send in your entries for the Sculpting Contest until August 31 (2006). 1. The theme: From H.G.Wells to H.P. Lovecraft : Asylum. That could probably do with a little more explanation. Like you will have guessed by now, "Asylum" is the name of the boardgame developped for this contest. The period is loosely defined as ranging from the late Victorian to that period between worldwars appreciated by fans of pulp and Cthulhu mythos. The location is the Frothsville Sanatorium, a renowned asylum for the criminally insane, where even the staff go a little crazy once in a while. It is located in the right wing of a long abandoned mansion. The left wing has been closed down for as long as anyone can remember, but if it's really abandoned, then what are those noises you can sometimes hear late at night? So as not to limit the sculptor's creativity, we won't set any specific categories in advance, which would be nearly impossible, but will look at the entries we get and see which categories - if any - emerge from the submissions. You can enter as many different figures as you want. Professional and Amateur may both enter – the angry young sculptors should be ready to humble their elder peers. They have done so in the past. 2. The Judges Who will decide which entries are the most frothworthy? We have tried to enlist the esteemed author's Wells and Lovecraft, but rumour goes they are no longer among the living (and quite keen to stay that way). Instead, we went to the next best thing. Who better than our own UnclEvl, who is heavily involved in creating the Asylum game as one of the directors of Woteva Games, to judge the worthiness of your entries? Do not answer that. One man does not make a jury, so he'll be joined by a very talented sculptor with an undeniable feel for the period: Mark Copplestone of Copplestone Castings. No jury would be complete without a renowned painter in it. This year's painting judge will be Witchunter, for his familiarity with the pulp era. This left us with the 'frother slot' to fill and WK graciously agreed to do it one more time, givenhis work on the Pulp Showcase (he also compiled these pages, so there was noone to stop him - ed.). 3. The Winners There can be only one... erm... well... as much as there will be categories, and... erm... maybe more. Crikey! Each category will have a winner (the category’s first) and runners-up. The winner of each category will be moulded and cast up at our expense (well, their figures anyway - Ed). A full set of the figures will be given to each winner, with a few individual castings of their figure. If the quality of the entries is of a high level we reserve the right to cast up a selection of the runners-up as well, who will then also be given a full set of the figures and castings of their own sculpts. Naturally, a free copy of the game will be included. Winners should be prepared to send their sculpts to mouldmaker Pete Brown at their own expense (we can't pay for everything) and risk (mail). 4. IP and the rights to the figures Who owns the reproduction rights to the figures? We have given this some long reflection and have decided the rights should stay where they belong, being with the sculptor. However, for froth’s sake, we reserve the right to produce the figures for a limited period of two months after the production mould is made. The figures will only be sold as full sets and at a low price. Sales of this set will go towards production costs of the set as well as operating costs of the FU!UK community. It is not our intention to earn a profit from these sales. It is not our aim to get free sculpts so we can make money off them. Naturally, all contest winners will be able to get individual copies of their own figure(s) at cost. After this limited period of availability, all rights will return to the sculptor, who will retain complete intellectual property rights over them and can do with the figures as he (or she) pleases, including selling them as part of his (or her) own range. At this point we will stop production of the set. However, if any or all of the sculptors wish to see us continue production of their figure(s), they may contact us to work out a new arrangement. All this and more is included in the Competion Rules, which you must read before entering. Honestly, it's common sense to do so. Any queries relating to the frother sculpting contest should be referred to contest enquiries. FU!UK is not responsible for any acts of grand larceny carried out through its web site. I hope. |

Submission GuidelinesBefore you start sculpting it's a good idea to take the time to read these important submission criteria. First of all, originality is expected here. You can't go around copying someone else's designs or artwork. A 3D copy of a 2D original is still a violation of copyright, unless the original art is in the public domain, or you got (written) permission from the artist. The scale should be 28mm. This doesn't mean the figure has to be exactly 28mm sole to eye, but if it represents an adult, it should be pretty close to that scale. This being said, if you sculpt a miniature of someone of a younger age, or a non-human race, then by all means sculpt it in accordance. Be imaginative. Secrecy clause: In order to avoid any possible predisposition amongst judges, complete secrecy is expected until after the contest. This means that we will pass on all entries to the judges anonymously. To help us with this, you are asked not to post pictures of your entries anywhere else and to refrain from divulging your chosen subject on any public or private forums. The competition emphasises the sculptor’s complete responsibility: to make a nice looking fig which can be cast. The practicality of making it will be judged alongside the froth value and degree of craftsmanship. In order to aid the beginning sculptor to ensure his work meets these criteria, a set of guidelines and basic sculpting and moulding FAQ can be found here. Sculpts that will require breaking into separate parts to make casting possible are allowed, but wait with the separating until our mouldmaker can give you instructions of what is required. To enable us to judge accurately, we will ask you to supply the best quality pictures you can take, from different angles (3 to 4 shots should do). We would recommend 300dpi at most and preferrably no more than 600 pixels in any direction. Please send JPEG files compressed to 'best' quality (80-90%) and files no larger than 150Kb (each). Remember to trim the image around the figure, just like the pros do - we don't want to be downloading images of your whole workdesk, complete with views over the Danube. At least one of the pictures should have a ruler in it in order to judge the actual size of the figure (you may submit the size comparison shot at a lower size and/or quality - provided it is recognisably the same figure!). Pictures can be mailed to sculpting@frothersunite.com. The judges may contact you to request additional pictures of your sculpt. If you don’t own a good camera or your photography skills are in line with those of some of our General Staff and you still wish to enter, you can contact us if you wish to send your actual sculpt to us. As we said earlier, categories will be formed based on submissions. The figures have to fit in with the "Asylum" game setting, which means the period has to be late Victorian to Interbellum (pulp era). You can enter as many different figures as you want in as many different categories as you want. All submissions will be added to the Contest Gallery. The
potential for characters is pretty large, e.g.: Diorama's are not forbidden, but in that case, make sure the figures can be removed and used as separate game tokens. We do not want to stifle anyone's creativity, but a full blown dahliesque mindscape diorama is unlikely to make a good gaming piece after all... Feel free to accompany your submission with a (brief) description of your inspiration for the sculpt. Before you enter, it is important that you read these Competition Rules. Deadline
for submissions is August 31 (2006), at midnight (UK-time)! So reach for that putty now and start sculpting, and who knows, the winning entry in one of the categories below could be yours...
